The Science of Embodied Voice Breathwork®

Embodied Voice Breathwork® is a powerful somatic healing practice that combines conscious connected breathwork, vocal expression, and nervous system regulation to support emotional release, mental clarity, and deeper embodiment.

This breathwork method works directly with the brain, body, and nervous system — helping you shift out of stress and into a more regulated, present, and connected state.

How Breathwork Affects the Brain

During a breathwork session, activity in the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for thinking, analyzing, and self-judgment — begins to quiet.

This is the area behind your forehead that helps you plan, organize, and make decisions.

While essential, when overactive it can lead to:

• overthinking
• self-doubt and inner criticism
• anxiety and mental fatigue

Through conscious connected breathwork, this part of the brain temporarily softens, allowing you to move out of constant mental activity and into a more embodied, present state.

What Happens in the Brain and Body

As the breath deepens and the nervous system begins to regulate:

• brainwaves shift from beta (thinking) into alpha and theta (relaxed, meditative states)
• the body enters a state of deep relaxation and openness
• emotional and physical tension can begin to release naturally

In these states, the brain becomes more flexible and connected, allowing for:

• new insights and clarity
• creative thinking and inspiration
• integration of emotions and past experiences

This is often where people experience moments of breakthrough, healing, and deep inner connection.

The Role of Voice and Sound

A unique aspect of Embodied Voice Breathwork® is the integration of vocal toning, sound, and expression.

The voice is deeply connected to the nervous system, vagus nerve, and emotional centers of the body.

Through sound and vocalization:

• the nervous system is further regulated
• emotional energy can move and release more freely
• expression becomes easier and more natural

Practices like toning and singing have been shown to support:

• thyroid health and hormonal balance
• lung capacity and breath function
• nervous system regulation
• emotional processing and expression

The breath opens the body.

The voice allows it to express.

Together, they create a powerful pathway for healing and transformation.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

Fern’s approach to breathwork training and facilitation in Costa Rica is both intuitive and grounded in science.

Through Embodied Voice Breathwork®, participants are supported to:

• release stored emotional and physical tension
• move through limiting beliefs and self-doubt
• regulate the nervous system
• reconnect with their body and inner guidance
• express themselves with more confidence and authenticity

This is not about forcing change.

It’s about creating the conditions where transformation can happen naturally.
